Trinity Blood is Gonzo's latest project to hit the American shores, and it's every bit as flashy and impressive-looking as one would expect from a Gonzo production. The rich, elaborate costumes of the nuns and high Church officials are particularly eye-catching with their vibrant colors and stylish designs, and to a lesser degree the costuming for everyone else is also sharp. Character designs are also widely-varied, with some major characters (particularly Catherina) having more severe looks than one would normally expect for characters in their roles. CG-enhanced backgrounds provide for some beautiful artistic and architectural designs nearly as eye-popping in places as Gonzo's efforts in Gankutsuou, while the long red scimitar-like weapon that Abel produces when he reveals his true form is also quite inventive, if completely over-the-top. The animation does take some shortcuts in the fight scenes and seems a little awkward in places where it's just showing characters walking but is otherwise good. Overall the movie is a visual treat, although for all its style it lacks a certain amount of freshness.

And that's where the problem with Trinity Blood lies: the lack of originality it has shown so far. This movie presentation looks like a conglomeration of elements borrowed from nearly every other major series Gonzo has done to date. The fantastic airships look almost like they flew right out of Last Exile or Vandread, for instance, while various characters and costume designs were clearly patterned off of sources ranging from Kiddy Grade to Chrono Crusade. The set-up is also hardly original, with the “hunter of hunters” masquerading as a normal good-guy human and revealing his true nature only at the climatic confrontation of each story (and out of sight of more innocent protagonists) being a hold-over from innumerable other supernatural series from the past couple of decades. To balance some of this out the series goes out of its way to try to make its fight scenes look cool and stylish, but it would have been better-served by making good fight scenes rather than “cool” ones. The only thing distinctly different is the presumption that, at this point in the future, women are allowed to become Bishops within the Church.

It also doesn't help that Abel is not even in the top 50% when it comes to interesting and distinctive vampire hunters. His practice of hiding his true nature behind a sweet, bumbling veneer which always grouses about his perpetual penniless status is doubtless intended to make him endearing, but it more often comes across as fake and annoying. This kind of thing has been done elsewhere and done better. Although being paired with a human-looking android enforcer is unusual as vampire-fighting tales go, Tres's robotic nature (and occasional behavior inconsistent with being an android) doesn't deliver much interest, either.

Fortunately the storytelling includes more interesting supporting characters. Jessica, the pilot-wannabe heroine of the first part, is much more appealing and credible than Abel, as is Esther, the heroine of the third part and apparent regular cast member. Esther is also the only character so far to display any degree of depth in a story stocked with standard one-dimensional personalities. Her situation isn't that original, either, but unlike the rest of the writing it is handled well.

Although the heavily-dramatic orchestrated musical score should sound great in a theater and would be appropriate for a true dramatic action movie, it's overblown by series standards, which can make it sound pretentious. The gentler piano-based tunes used in more peaceful scenes work better, but on the whole the score is overwrought. The opener and closer for the movie both use the same music as their counterparts in the series, but whether or not the graphics are the same cannot be confirmed.

Aside from the artistry, the greatest strength of the movie is its English dub, which sounds as smooth as if the title was originally made in English and consistently features quality voice work. Casting feels dead-on, with the highlight performance being Colleen Clinkenbeard (probably best-known for Eclaire on Kiddy Grade and both Rose and Hawkeye on Fullmetal Alchemist) as Esther, who delivers an effort which sounds distinct from her other roles and fully captures the troubled nature of her character. Troy Baker (Archer from Fullmetal Alchemist) also does a commendable job of handling the varied vocal styles of Abel Nightroad. How accurate the dub script is, and how well the performances reflect those of the original seiyuu, could not be determined since only a dubbed version of the movie was available, but evaluated solely as a stand-alone effort it's a great job.

What has been shown of Trinity Blood so far isn't Gonzo's best or most original effort, but it does have a sharp enough look and good enough dub for the movie to be worth checking out if you can. For the series as a whole to be worth watching, though, the storytelling and character development need to improve.

Review:
If anyone was still under the misguided impression that Welcome to the NHK was some kind of goofy otaku fun-fest, this volume should set them straight. Gone are the days of maid cafés and ero-games; Satou's descent into depravity has long since surpassed the Fanboy Circle of Hell. It seems even Misaki, his self-proclaimed "guardian angel," finds herself staring into the abyss ... and having the abyss stare back at her. As an examination of the human psyche's dark side, this series is second to none. It's not just about Satou's desperate state anymore, but about the characters surrounding him as well, and how society's pressures have pushed them all into madness. Yes, most of this sounds unbelievably depressing. But with the story's sharp, satirical tone, it can also be unbelievably funny.
To find the unbelievably funny part, just go straight to the opening chapter, which breaks into a hilariously dead-on spoof of "Online RPG Fire Fantasy." Familiar characters and monsters and gameplay are all here, and Satou's obsessive behavior often hits awfully close to home. (The best part of the spoof, however, is saved until the next chapter.) At the same time, though, this raucous send-up segues into a more serious part of the storyline: Misaki's drastic attempt to rehabilitate Satou by tying him up in a locked room. At first it seems like just an escalated version of what's been going on in the first two volumes, but it only takes one line for Satou to turn the tables on Misaki: "If you're 17, shouldn't you be in school?" At last, it looks like Misaki's psychological armor is starting to crack.
It's this kind of dark, cynical character drama that drives the story so well. However, the element of satire also adds another layer of entertainment, especially with Satou's foray into the world of multi-level marketing. Just when you thought this series had skewered every part of society ... it manages to find another one. The ultra-positive brainwashing and high-pressure mantras are all there, but what this part of the story does better than anything else is to show how sales vultures prey on the self-esteem of others. With Satou as the ultimate case of low self-esteem, there's something morbidly fascinating about seeing a sales rep sink her teeth into him and dump a pile of useless "My Way" products into his lap. By this point it's impossible to tear one's self away from the beautiful, psychological trainwreck that these characters have become. If there is any criticism against the story, it's that one key player—Yamazaki—doesn't get to put in much of an appearance here, and the plot itself is becoming monotone: it's always "Oh look, Satou is being pulled ever deeper into a cycle of despair!"
As always, the artwork of the series is solid throughout, and the RPG segment in particular gives Kendi Oiwa a chance to stretch out artistically—fancy costumes, towering dragons, pastoral backgrounds. Most times, however, the main challenge lies in depicting Satou's many states of mental distress—and Oiwa somehow manages to come up with a new facial expression for every situation. It's endlessly entertaining to watch the parade of shocked, disturbed and stressed-out faces as Satou confronts each of society's ills. Detailed backgrounds also help to bring the story across: Satou's cluttered, anime-poster-strewn apartment is an instant reflection of his personality, for example, and the crowds at the multi-level marketing seminar really capture that pumped-up mass hysteria. With clean, rectangular layouts and frequent speedlines leading the way, this a story that moves along briskly and bristles with energy.
Out of Tokyopop's many, many translations, this series stands among one of their best, if not the best. One footnote in the cultural glossary (when was the last time they ever did a cultural glossary?) says it all: "Translating the crazy ramblings on these pages are a major pain in the ass, but it's worth it because they are absolutely hilarious"—in response to a four-page omake where Satou rants about his ero-game and wonders if the rant will be translated along with the rest of the manga. Oh yes, about the rest of the manga—the dialogue is full of vigor and wit, with a straightforward tone that conveys mad outbursts, tearful breakdowns, and everything in between. The art is reproduced sharply as well, so the only shortcoming left is the fact that this publisher still chooses not to translate sound effects.
Welcome to the NHK walks a strange line between emotional extremes—and maybe that's what makes it such a unique experience. At its most insanely comical (the online RPG arc), it still carries a cloud of of desperation; at its most pitiable (Satou getting suckered into MLM), there is still something to laugh at. Certainly, it's not to be confused with the average mainstream manga where a pathetic loser guy gets into a series of quirky misadventures. No, this is about a a guy who's so pathetic, so far past loser, that he can barely even function in society. And then, when society starts to cave in on him, they get to be shown in that unflattering spotlight as well. Clearly, nobody—and nothing—is safe from this series' piercing, cynical outlook on life.

Since the earliest days of popular fiction, the short-story horror genre has drawn in readers with grim tales of unnatural phenomena. Some border on the wild and fantastical, filled with psychics and monsters; some are flavored with interdisciplinary approaches that may include both science and faith; others take the down-to-earth route and place ordinary things in the realm of the bizarre. Mail falls firmly into that last category, with sketches of modern life taking a turn for the macabre. This volume sees the series settling into a steady groove as Akiba continues his investigations; grotesque imagery and suspenseful storytelling guarantee plenty of chills this time around. Just one problem: ever get the feeling that you've read all this stuff somewhere before?

That's the biggest weakness of Mail, right there. As an episodic short story series, it's already in danger of being hit-or-miss with each chapter, and the urban-legend elements make it even more overtly familiar. Too familiar, in fact. Just about everything that's been used in horror tales past and present comes up in Yamazaki's stories: a haunted doll (in Victorian style, of course), a possessed painting, a creepy little house. Even the glitchy GPS system that appears in one chapter is basically an update of those wayward compasses from nautical ghost stories. The predictable story structure also leads to tedium: in the end, Akiba always gets his ghost, spouting a catchphrase as he administers his holy bullet. The first time, it's pretty cool. But as chapter after chapter ends the exact same way ... well, you almost want him to miss for once, just to see what happens. The only thing that changes is the victim and the method of haunting.

Within that strict framework, however, Housui Yamazaki has refined his craft to a high level. No matter what the situation, he can always dish out a good scare with uneasy moods and suspenseful pacing. The characters in each story all tend to resemble each other—wide-eyed common folk who know something's wrong, but won't admit to it—but this grim psychology is what drives each chapter forward. Add to that a perfect sense of beat and timing—panel to panel, page to page, until a horrific image is revealed—and it's easy to see how this series can still generate chills despite its use of familiar ideas. Like the best stories of its kind, it's not trying to go for blood and gore on every page; instead, it leads you by a soft, comforting hand ... one that grows colder and colder by the minute, until that awful moment of terror strikes.

Visual layouts are the key to this manifestation of fear. Yamazaki has a natural knack for the full-page and two-page spread, using strong perspective and shocking images to deliver a powerful effect. Even if it's just a straight-ahead view, there's always something frightening to behold: your best friends' deformed heads, or ghostly kids walking through a field. Efficiency of line is another trademark of the artwork; the style may not be incredibly detailed, but it's still very confident, with precise curves outlining the realistically-proportioned characters, and simple hatch lines providing the shading. Blacks and solid grays help to add contrast, and at the same time establish the dour mood that hangs over the work. Backgrounds are also essential to each story's setting, and Yamazaki clearly has the chops to handle these: countrysides, suburbs, apartment interiors, and the most unique challenge, a claustrophobia-inducing elevator.

With slick storytelling and efficient artwork already in this series' favor, a top-notch translation is simply icing on the cake: there's nothing to complain about in the dialogue, which reads like the most natural thing in the world. Like the actual stories, the script is down-to-earth, getting the point across with a minimum of fuss. Text within the artwork is also translated effectively: handwritten letters and diaries actually look like they've been in English the whole time, a feat that few manga translations have ever accomplished. Sound effects are the only problem spot—all the Japanese characters have been left intact, but translation is provided in the form of a back-of-the-book glossary, which is probably not the most efficient way to do it. (Do YOU feel like flipping back for every single BAN and KACHA? Didn't think so.) Readers will enjoy the first-rate print job, though, with the distinctive cardboard-style cover and flawlessly reproduced art.

There are a lot of good things going for Mail, with its well-crafted, suspenseful stories and striking artwork. Yet those stories rely on time-worn chestnuts of horror fiction, turning this into little more than a particularly high-class iteration of folk tales and urban legends. So take these words of warning while entering into Reiji Akiba's world of supernatural sleuthing: be ready for a fright, but also be ready for the same stuff you see in all other horror stories. Surely you've already heard from plenty of other folks about the spiritual dangers of the ordinary world. This series just happens to be really good at making you stick around for the whole spiel.

“Oh, Rin, is it okay if I fall even more in love with you?”
If this line does not make you gag, and you are a big fan of harem romantic comedies, then you just might be able to tolerate Shuffle! All others should stay at least a mile away.
Although the first four episodes can, at times, be genuinely enjoyable, usually they alternate between brazen stupidity, lame jokes, and disgusting sweetness, all the while carefully tailoring the female cast to male fantasies of having so many love interests, and ones the get along so well, that other guys get jealous of you. Kaede behaves so much like Rin's wife that he feels a bit guilty about “freeloading,” but she never seems fazed when other girls keep coming into the picture. Sia and Nerine, although they should be bitter rivals for Rin's affection, get along like best friends, and naturally Rin has another female friend who's “just friends” from his viewpoint but apparently not from hers. Primula fills the requisite loli slot in the harem scheme, even getting a strikingly sexy pose at one point despite her obvious youth. Naturally there are breast-size discourses, and of course the whole desire of Sia and Nerine to marry Rin goes back to childhood encounters. (What harem series would be complete without those?)

Amongst all the typical harem trappings like working together closely on homework, learning to cook for your guy, and walking together under an umbrella, the gross stupidity filters in. The fathers of Sia and Nerine sacrifice any dignity and purpose they should have as the kings of their respective realms to serve purely as comic support buffoons and give the girls something to be exasperated about; many of Sia's father's antics merit Sia clubbing him over the head with a chair, but that gag gets old fast. Far, far worse are the fan clubs. Despite not being portrayed as overwhelmingly beautiful, Kaede is regarded as the school's princess, so she has her own devoted fan club which periodically pops up and tries to go after Rin for monopolizing Kaede. Sia and Nerine get their own fan clubs once they show up, so by late in episode 2 Rin has to spend a lot of time dodging all three groups (although curiously he always seems to find sufficient peaceful moments to spend quality time with his harem). And, for inexplicable reasons, the girls rarely do much to discourage or stop this despite the fact that their love is in apparently mortal peril, probably because it would interfere with the sad attempts at humor.

Given that the founding harem series featured aliens and goddesses, gods and demons in the harem hardly cuts any new ground. That would have still been fine if Shuffle used the gods/demons angle to distinguish the girls and play up the contrasts between races, but at best the series makes only a half-hearted effort. No sense of conflict exists between the two realms (the respective kings are, in fact, very chummy), only ear designs offer any visual distinction between races, and all that behaviorally distinguishes Sia and Nerine from normal humans is their ability to call on vastly powerful magic when sufficiently annoyed. Take that and the ears away and they could be any anime girls; to put it another way, they simply have no presence as gods/demons. Episode 3 does offer an interesting tidbit about how differently language skills work with gods/demons, but it's far too little and only mentioned in passing.

One of the strengths of harem series is usually the wide array of pretty, interesting-looking girl designs composing the cast, but this lot, if one ignores the ears, has a blandness to them which fails to distinguish them much from girls that could be seen in a plethora of other series. Male designs fare no better except in the deliberately uglier designs used for the male fan club members. Good background art anchors the look, and the rare explosion scene looks satisfyingly cool, but otherwise the production does not look especially sharp. Mediocre animation, which balances out its group movement shots with plentiful shortcuts and awkwardness in some walking scenes, provides no help.

The soundtrack likewise does little to spruce up the production. It strolls along cheerily with the kind of synthesized and orchestrated light numbers that might be heard backing a dating sim game, which means that it supports the comic components relatively well but is also utterly forgettable. The opener “You” by Yuria, which kicks in with the second episode, delivers a strong, energetic J-rock number worth listening to independently; it is unquestionably the soundtrack's highlight. Closer “innocence,” which features different visuals in episode 1 than in the rest, is a more laid-back love song.

The script offered a special challenge to American adaptation because the fan clubs of Kaede, Sai, and Nerine are all named by triplets of the first letters of their respective names. That makes Kaede's the KKK, which may be completely harmless elsewhere but comes heavily loaded with baggage in the States. [For those who do not live in the U.S., KKK is the common abbreviation for the Klu Klux Klan, a notorious white supremacist movement that has been around for more than a century.] Funimation apparently decided it was too hard to work around, so they left it intact but compensated by adding lines into the English dialog about how they are “not the guys in the sheets” – and yes, this is a necessary adjustment, as it would have been too edgy for the content otherwise. Their script otherwise adjusts dialogue to be more appropriate for English humor styles but rarely strays far from the original meaning, although the English script is regularly at odds with the subtitles over the use of “demons” vs. “devils” and uses the “butts in seats” line by the teacher more frequently than the subtitles do. Although the timber of his voice matches with that of the original performer, the quality of Jerry Jewell's voice makes him seem like an odd choice for a harem male lead, but it is the only even slightly questionable casting choice and performances lose nothing in the switch between languages.

Rin Tsuchimi has lived with cute classmate Kaede Fuyou since losing his parents in an accident several years ago, but otherwise is a normal high school student in a world where gods and demons (devils in the subtitles) have entered the mortal realm and cohabitated with humans. The worst of his troubles were dealing with a girl-obsessed friend and over-aggressive members of Kaede's fan club, but his life gets more complicated when two cute new girls transfer into his class. One, Nerine (aka “Rin-chan”), is the daughter of the King of the Demons, and the other, Sia, is the daughter of the King of the Gods, and both are there because they have loved Rin since childhood encounters and now seek to marry him! Even further, both of them and their hyper-involved fathers move in to the vacant lots to either side of Rin and Kaede's house. That now leaves Rin with three overly-aggressive fan clubs and two overly-aggressive fathers to deal with, on top of which another girl named Primula shows up to live with him and Kaede, too. Choices, choices. . .

Fans of harem romantic comedies might be able to tolerate this bland and uninspired exercise in brazen stupidity, lame jokes, and disgusting sweetness. All others should stay well away.
The first volume contains only textless songs for on-disc Extras. The case also includes bonus interior art and a mini-poster featuring Sia and Nerine.
The first four episodes do offer at least a few not-entirely-weak aspects: Rin does show at least some backbone and occasional selfishness, the more gentle kidding sounds natural, Rin's male friend Itsuki offers surprisingly welcome comic relief with his confident ladies' man routine, and the homeroom teacher has a likeable gruffness. Those seeking fan service will find a couple of decent scenes, and when not going overboard (really, who needs that much practice just to crack an egg right?) the series can be entertaining. Much too often it plays to extremes, however. Based on its first volume, Shuffle does not have what it takes to succeed even within the low standards for harem romantic comedies and shows little potential for improvement.

There's no shortage of cruelty and desperation in the world to fuel hatred deep enough to reach the bowels of hell, so Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, has no shortage of work. From evil in-laws to greedy neighbors, the parade of withered souls that Hell Girl prods down the path to eternal damnation never slackens. When a hubristic psychic who claims to have once escaped hell dares to confront her directly, even he learns the terror of true darkness. Ai's pursuers, reporter Hajime and his smart, tolerant daughter Tsugumi, try to thwart her at every turn, but consistently underestimate the power of despair in a world that offers few opportunities for justice. Tsugumi even begins to regard Hell Girl's dark service sympathetically, to the horror of her father. As she and Hajime work out their differences, Tsugumi continues to receive visions from Ai Enma, who is beginning to remember something once lost deep in the mists of time and memory. The memory leads Hajime and Tsugumi to a secluded temple, where they and Ai learn of their ancient, tragic connection, a connection that awakens in Ai a raging hatred to match any that afflicted her clients.

Hell Girl has always been more about slowly emerging patterns than propulsive serial storytelling—quietly introducing complications to an established pattern that unobtrusively expose new facets, both visceral and intellectual, of the premise—so it should come as no surprise that rather than build to a climactic story arc, Hell Girl opts instead to thread the personal issues that eventually comprise the climax into the kind of largely episodic tales it has always told.

The genius of Hell Girl is its ability to put viewers in a position where their head understands Hajime's moral objections but their heart still yearns for the brutal punishment that only Hell Girl can mete out. Even when winding up its first season the series doesn't forget that. The world is nasty and unforgiving, good people meet only misfortune, happiness never survives the influence of evil people, the villains are vile enough to deserve every ounce of pain hell can deliver (the deranged, doll-obsessed mother-in-law is perhaps the vilest yet), and whenever Hell Girl visits them, it's hard not to cheer her on. The slightly dirty satisfaction that comes from watching nasty people meet nasty ends hasn't waned over the course of the series; the train-wreck appeal of the episodes that adhere to the formula remains as powerful as ever.

As does the pervasive atmosphere of eerie dislocation that sets it apart from run-of-the-mill revenge pictures. Takahiro Omori continues to combine superb background artistry (particularly beautiful during the flashbacks to medieval Japan and at Hell Girl's home in the underworld), unnaturally perfect character designs, oppressive lighting, and an unsettling score composed of echoing atonal chimes, delicate, haunted vocals and doom-laden guitar to create a world of silently lurking menace and cruel beauty. He favors carefully animated close-ups and meticulously illustrated compositions over slick animation, and slow-building dread over flashy action. The series would be unthinkable without Omori's cold, measured direction, and for the most part he's smart enough to stick to his guns, rarely allowing the elegantly restrained tone of the series to slip.

Sticking to its narrative and stylistic guns doesn't mean that the series is entirely unwilling to experiment. The psychic-boy episode dabbles in black humor, and the episode in which a man uses Hell Girl as an instrument to fulfill his anonymous obsession with a pure-hearted nurse drives home the amoral nature of Hell Girl's service. Also throughout these eight episodes runs a newly acquired streak of character development which is allowed to slowly grow until it thoroughly dominates the climax. Hajime's relationship with Tsugumi takes on a convincing mix of genuine affection and sometimes harsh intolerance, the regret he feels regarding her mother driving him at times to unforgivable extremes in his quest to convince her of the soul-rending effects of vengeance. Tsugumi's evolving attitude towards revenge not only provides arguably the series' most poignant moments when she realizes that hatred isn't only directed at evil people, but also highlights nicely the childlike naiveté that underlies the worldly demeanor that her single-parent lifestyle has forced her to adopt. Ai Enma's character development is telling in a different way. Though always spooky, Hell Girl doesn't become a bon-a-fide monster until she rediscovers her human emotions, a fact that speaks volumes about the series' approach to horror.

True to Funimation's standard operating procedure, their English adaptation is fairly loosely translated but rarely alters the meaning of a given line and never, ever betrays the intent of a scene. Their willingness to stray from literal translation is rewarded by a script that reads smoothly and naturally, helped immensely by low-key performances to match. Brina Palencia has the unenviable task of following up Mamiko Noto's cold, delicately sensual turn as Hell Girl, and though she wisely opts for interpretation rather than imitation, her voice is sometimes weak and watery when it should be chillingly crystalline. She handles the intensity of the final three episodes well however, and is freed by the English script to do more than simply repeat the same catchphrases over and over. Though Palencia has the lead role, the real star of these episodes is Tsugumi, who Luci Christian invests with such emotional veracity that her every scene is simply heartbreaking. On the strength of her performance alone the emotional impact of the English climax easily surpasses that of the Japanese. It may still seem somewhat out of place in the usually understated series, but in English its heart-tugging power is truly undeniable.

Each disc contains a single good-natured discussion of the series by some combination of cast and crew. Both of them strive hard to be interesting and generally succeed, if only because of the behind-the-scenes information they impart.
As it wraps up its first season, Hell Girl's strengths are still preeminent. Restraint and atmosphere are still its watchwords—even its climax is allowed to surface slowly rather than rush itself to conclusion. If the boy psychic episode is too campy and the emotional resolution of the climax—which weaves Hajime, Tsugumi and Ai's respective feelings together with surprising effectiveness—a tad overwrought, they're flaws that are easily forgiven in a series that is both smarter and more humane than its bitter cynicism might indicate.

It goes practically without saying that Hoshino has some of the best artwork in the business. She draws in the sort of aesthetic yet dynamic, superbly beautiful yet super-violent, style that made justifiably famous by the late-80s to early-90s female mangaka who came out of the doujinshi subculture. (CLAMP and Yun Kouga are two prominent examples.) Character designs—both male and female—are especially lovely and pitched to satisfy fans of both sexes. Allen, for example, looks like a visual-kei rock star with his spiky blond hair and skintight leather costume and Tyki has surely starred in his fair share of yaoi doujinshi. Unfortunately, she is much less skilled when it comes to action sequences; the battles, even as late in the game as volume twelve, remain practically unintelligible—you will be hard pressed, during Krory's fight with Jasdevi and Allen's fight with Tyki, to figure out who is doing what to whom and when. About the most that can be deciphered from Hoshino's cryptic layouts is that, yes, they're fighting. Wowie.

The weakest of the subplots here in this volume involves Lavi's battle of wills with Road Kamelot. While Allen is duking it out with Tyki and Lenalee is watching helplessly from within a die-shaped force field, Road is playing with Lavi's head. In particular, she torments him with his future vocation taking the place of Bookman, who records the deeds of Exorcists but does not, at least ideally, intervene to tip the scales of competition. Lavi is not keen on watching all of his friends die one by one, and this is exactly what Road is making him do. In theory it should be an emotional scene, driven by character development, but it just feels tired and perfunctory. Most disappointing. In any case, whether or not Lavi will escape with his life, especially once the tide starts to turn against the Noah, remains an open question.

Volume twelve of Katsura Hoshino's ongoing tournament shounen manga D.Gray-man represents a major turning point in the Black Order's ongoing war to end all wars against the Millenium Earl's elite soldiers, the Clan of Noah. Previously, their God-blessed Innocence could only be used to defeat Akuma. As powerful as these weapons were, they did not have any particular effect upon humans—even extraordinary ones such as the Noah. Yet the Noah have the power to destroy Innocence. Doesn't quite seem fair, does it? Nevertheless, this, in fact, is the reason why Allen suffered a near disastrous defeat against Tyki Mikk in a previous story arc.

Allen is not the only one who powers up in this volume. Although it looked like the end of the line for vampire and comic relief character Krory once Jasdevi had imprisoned him in an Iron Maiden, it turns out that his Innocence isn't just in his razor sharp incisors. It's in his blood too, and his blood assumes humanoid form after a hallucinatory powwow with the akuma that he still loves deeply and begins a brief round two with Jasdevi. And since you cannot cut liquid, it is safe to say that the battle is an exceedingly short, one-sided one. Krory is quite the lovable character—certainly he is the most unusual of heroes to be found thus far in D.Gray-man—and you will find yourself cheering him on, glad that his final word was not to be abject defeat in volume eleven.

Now they are due for a rematch, and the stakes have never been higher. Tyki is going all out against Allen, now with the new and improved power of the “Crowned Clown,” has a proverbial ace up his sleeve of which even he himself was heretofore unaware. If the Noah have the power to destroy Innocence, it stands to reason that Innocence should have the power to destroy the Noah in turn…right? That would, needless to say, be a very smart supposition. Get ready to see the suave smirk wiped quite suddenly off of the bipolar Tyki's face when Allen whips out a larger than life sword that looks like it was imported direct from Final Fantasy VII.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
Rating: 0 (of 5)
Review:Meanwhile, those who survive long enough to watch the actual episode can look forward to brain damage as a complement to their burned-out eyes. The plot centers around a color-coded quartet of schoolgirls known collectively as Milky Holmes, who use their psychic powers (known as "Toys" in this universe, because apparently creators are running out of goofy nicknames for psychic powers) to solve crimes and stop a band of "Gentlemen Thieves." However, when they lose their TO-Y powers several minutes into the episode, the girls also lose their motivation and start screwing around at the Holmes Detective Academy, where entire generations of schoolchildren can study to be super-sleuths. By the way, if the idea of majoring in Forensic Science before you're even in high school doesn't sound loony enough, consider that the villainous Thieves are all covertly posing as staff and students at the school. If Milky Holmes are so smart, why haven't they figured that out? By the episode's end, the girls are given an ultimatum: get your Toys back in three months or be expelled. This comes as no surprise.
In summation, the episode consists of about 20% premise and setup, 80% random schoolgirl antics, and 0% actual crime solving. Right now, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle isn't rolling in his grave. He's crawling out of it and ambling across the Eurasian landmass so he can strangle the necks of the people who made this.

But, in expected fashion, her mentally abusive pseudo-husband Soichiro comes flying to her rescue with dramatic bravado laced with flashbacks to his own angsty-childhood. Upon being saved, using the term a bit loosely, Sumi takes it upon herself to nurse Soichiro back to health, oblivious to the fact he's apparently developing actual feelings for her. But what of Nozomu? No worries there, he's already dove into his family's financial affairs to distract from his loss. Or not. Nozomu soon has a wife of his own to use and begins concocting his plans for getting Sumi back involving a campaign to infiltrate Soichiro's company. All good friendly competition though – after all, everything up until this very point has been according to Soichiro's master plan in the first place.

Stepping on Roses
manga 3
Introduction volumes allowed for easy excuses made for the series – a beautiful art style glossing over the story of a girl being abused and enslaved with cheesy romance-story overtones. It was a guilty pleasure sort of thing. Stepping On Roses tries to be funny, it tries to be cute, and it even tries to be dramatic – but against all attempts to give it the benefit of a doubt, what this story succeeds in being here in the third volume is unapologetically terrible.
